IYC accuses Bayelsa politicians of hijacking, abandoning contracts

Ijaw youths, under the auspices of Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide, have accused some Bayelsa State politicians, particularly those based in Abuja, of failure to execute contracts they got from the Niger Delta Development Commission.

The Chairman, IYC, Central Zone, Mr. Tari Porri, made the accusation during a news conference in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital, on Thursday.

Porri said apart from the non-execution of contracts, some politicians from the state were in the habit of hijacking contracts meant for the youth of the zone and beyond and that they usually ended up abandoning such projects.

He lamented that the zone had the largest number of abandoned projects due to the alleged criminal tendencies of the unnamed politicians.

Porri said, “Recently, IYC Central Zone engaged the Bayelsa State representative in the NDDC. Of course, we used that occasion to address a few issues that were bothering the IYC and the Ijaw nation. The issues ranged from the abandonment of contracts and some bigwigs from the state hijacking contracts meant for the youth.

“The usual water hyacinth jobs that were hitherto given to Ijaw youths and other zones of the IYC have been hijacked by the politicians, yet water hyacinth epidemics have ravaged our waterways in the Niger Delta. “As I speak to you, all the waterways in our respective communities are blocked because of the effects of water hyacinths.”

Porri, who condemned the act in its entirety, vowed that the youth would resist the leaders and make them account for their “iniquities” against the people of the state.

He said, “This time round, the IYC Central Zone will resist any attempt by leaders who do not mean well for the well-being of Ijaw youths in the zone to shortchange the youth. Our leaders must be made to account for this criminality.” Punch
