Veteran Nollywood actor Olumide Bakare has died in the early hours of Saturday, April 22, after battling a heart and lung related disease since 2013.
Olumide Bakare’s death was announced by the former president of the National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners, Mufu Onifade who said “He had a successful surgery and after the surgery, he talked to people and told them he was fine. But two hours later, he passed on. It is very painful because I had actually been wishing him a quick recovery.”
65-year old Olumide Bakare had suffered a cardiac arrest on January 24, 2016, and was rushed to the University College Hospital, Ibadan where his life was saved after a tough battle.
At a point, the “Maami” actor had reportedly spent more than N1 million on treatments and was once taking 4 injections daily with each one injection costing more than N14, 000.
During an interview with City People after his heart attack, the veteran actor said “It has started since 2013 but it wasn’t as bad as it is now. We have treated it but you know things like that don’t go easily. About 15 days ago, the sickness resurfaced and I was rushed to the emergency unit of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, where I have been admitted.”
Describing his illness, Olamide Bakare said “After the test was conducted, the result revealed that I am suffering from ‘Dissecting Aortic Aneurysm and Pulmonary Embolism’ which has to do with heart-related issues. From the diagram, it showed that there is a blockage in the vein that takes blood to the heart.”
Olumide Bakare died unmarried, leaving behind four children.
