Rivers United lose 2-0 At Home To Club Africain
Nigeria’s only Continental Cup campaigners, Rivers United on Sunday edged close to an early exit from their group with a 2-0 lose to Tunisia’s Club Africain. A goal from Mannoubi Hadded and a late own goal from captain Festus Austin ensured all three points for the Tunisians and a promise of a quarter final spot.
Femi Thomas who stepped in for injured Rotimi Sunday made a positive impression saving the Nigerian side in the early stages with wonderful reflex saves. Ayo Saka’s wastefulness in front of goal in the 28th minute and Sakin’s off target header in the 40th minute ensured a goalless first half.
The North Africans broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute, when a free-kick from 20 year-old Hadded deflected off Sakin and flew straight into the Rivers United goal.
Bernard Ovoke’s 76th minute solo run lacked the final touch to restore parity leaving the bench and the coach frustrated.
The icing on the cake for the Tunisian’s came in the 89th minute when Skipper Festus unluckily turned the ball into his own net to make it 2-0 for the North Africans. The Nigerian side is now bottom of group A with 6points and will need a win against FUS Rabat who also has 6points to redeem their chances of making it out of the group phase.
