Revealed! Wenger recommended Rohr for Eagles – Pinnick
The President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick, has revealed that Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, recommended Gernot Rohr for the Super Eagles job.
Pinnick revealed that Wenger and former Liverpool manager, Gérard Houllier, handed Nigeria the Franco-German coach after due consultations for a national team gaffer.
His words: “I think Paul Le Guen’s refusal to coach Nigeria was a blessing because we were at a crossroad and thinking who to give the Super Eagles job to and we consulted with Arsene (Wenger) and Houllier but the name that kept coming is Rohr. So, we decided to interview him. He was very calm, matured with his answers and we settled for him.
“He promised to do his best and he demanded for a martial art coach, sound technical crew and other apparatus.
“Today, the man has qualified us for the World Cup without having to go through rigours of permutations and all that.”
Speaking further, the NFF boss informed that the coach has been offered new two-year contract, just as the federation has paid his salary till December this year.
Pinnick also assured that the three-time African champions, the Super Eagles will play grade A friendlies ahead of the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup.
He said: “For me, FIFA ranking is just numbers, even the Argentines were shocked with our ranking after defeating them. But let me assure you that we are going to fish out for top friendlies after the draw is conducted.” The Eagle
