Alleged murder: Police arrest 36 Nekede Poly students

No fewer than 36 students of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Imo State, were arrested shortly after the killing of a member of the National Youth Service Corps, simply identified as Justice.

The deceased, a graduate of the institution serving in Cross River State, was murdered at the Polytechnic junction last Saturday.

Addressing journalists in Owerri, the state capital, on Monday, the Imo State Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, said that, apart from arresting the prime suspects, the command had carried out a raid at the scene of the crime, which led to the arrest of the 36 students.

The CP also noted that the preliminary investigation conducted by the command showed that the killing was cult-related. He said the raid and arrests were necessary to prevent any reprisal from a rival cult group.

Meanwhile, the killing of the corps member has sent shock waves among the students. Some of them, who spoke to our correspondent on Monday, described the incident as heart-breaking. They also confessed to being scared by the resurgence of cult-related murders in the institution.

Most students who live around the spot where the murder took place fled the area for fear of being caught in a cross-fire between rival secret cults. They returned only after they learnt that the CP had deployed a team of policemen to keep the peace in the institution.  Punch
